Description

One of the most magnificent areas in the Alps, the Dolomites offer a wide range of different landscapes. Gentle low mountain ranges stand right next to abruptly towering rocky domes, green meadow oases next to barren cart fields, lovely larch forests above abysmal gorges and bizarre tower labyrinths above dreamy mountain lakes. The highest elevations of just over 3000 meters are found in the northern and central areas, with the peaks decreasing in height towards the south. Due to their diversity, the Dolomites are popular with hikers, high-altitude trail lovers, climbers and via ferrata enthusiasts alike.

In this Rother hiking book, now in its second, carefully updated edition, Franz Hauleitner describes 50 beautiful and varied walking and mountain routes made from the entire area of the Dolomites between the Eisack Valley, Puster Valley and Piave Valley. The quieter southern regions, which are less familiar to German-speaking mountaineers, are also included. The selection ranges from easy panoramic trails to more strenuous hut hikes and summit ascents to mountain routes with secured climbing routes and easy climbing passages. In addition to classics such as the Sciliar, Piz Boè, Marmolada and Civetta, less well-known and quieter mountain destinations are also presented. In the introductory section of this hiking book, the author presents the landscape and the national parks of the Dolomites. The ten Dolomite high-altitude trails are also briefly listed. The routes section is broken up by informative texts about snakes and the weather and climate.

Each route is presented with an introductory characterization, a short profile, a colour hiking map at a scale of 1:50,000 with the route marked, a meaningful elevation profile, detailed directions and colour photos. The route table on the cover flap is particularly user-friendly, allowing a quick and targeted selection of suitable routes. It provides the reader with an overview of cable cars, accessibility by public transport, suitability for children, via ferratas as well as places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation. It also contains information on the frequency of access as well as the length and difficulty of the individual routes.

Franz Hauleitner | Bergverlag Rother | 3rd edition 2015 | 192 pages | 124 color illustrations, 50 hiking maps at a scale of 1:50,000, 50 elevation charts, an overview map | format 12.5 x 20.0 cm | paperback
