Description

The Arctic Circle Trail runs around 100 km north of the Arctic Circle between the former US military airfield and current civilian airfield, Kangerlussuaq, with around 700 inhabitants, and the port town of Sisimiut to the west, with just under 6,000 inhabitants. In between, far away from any civilization, there are hundreds of smaller and larger lakes, mountains, streams, rivers and a few public huts. Without any supply options, apart from drinking water, the trail runs for 174 km through an untouched and impressive landscape with sometimes very difficult, stony, muddy surfaces, through countless larger and smaller rivers and over a total of 3600 m of ascent and descent. With a bit of luck, you may spot musk oxen, reindeer, mountain hares and Arctic foxes or the white-tailed eagle in the wild.

Oliver Schröder, David Kuhnert, Meike Woick | Conrad Stein Verlag | 2nd edition 2014 | 160 pages | 16 maps, 44 color illustrations, 11 color elevation profiles
