Essential equipment for freeride skiing/powder skiing can be quickly defined: avalanche beacon, probe, shovel, and ideally, an avalanche backpack. Moreover, the basics such as a warm hat, gloves and sunscreen. It’s necessary to consider what conditions and difficulties will be like before taking off – More often than not, an ice-pick, harness and rope may need to be included in your pack as part of the necessary gear for an alpine classic. If you are travelling in unknown terrain, it’s wise to put a local map or guide for ski freeriding onto your checklist. A tip for all travelling powder-junkies: if you decide to hire wide powder skis for heli-skiing, remember to ask the rental company in advance whether your usual freeride boots will fit the bindings. This avoids any nasty surprises on the first powder day because no matter whether it’s a non-slip tour tread that you have or classic alpine soles-both fit only into the appropriate bindings.
